BEDFORD — A Bedford man is facing charges of residential entry and criminal mischief after a homeowner’s doorbell camera captured him allegedly attempting to enter her residence and causing damage to the door handle.
Jeremy W. Evans, 39, has been charged in Lawrence County following an investigation by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department into an incident that occurred late on October 20, 2025.

The investigation began at approximately 11:33 p.m., when a resident in the 700 block of Trinton Circle contacted the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to report a suspicious male attempting to gain entry to her home.
Captain Harrison Fleetwood and other officers responded to the scene. Although the male suspect had already left, the homeowner showed Captain Fleetwood the footage from her doorbell camera. The video, recorded by the captain’s body camera, showed a bald male with a goatee, wearing dark pants and a light-colored jacket (later identified as Evans), approaching the back door and twisting the handle in an apparent attempt to enter. The man was then seen walking around the front yard and looking into the windows.
Shortly after leaving the residence, Captain Fleetwood located a male matching the suspect’s description with an Indiana State Police Trooper nearby. The man was identified as Jeremy Evans.
When questioned about his presence in the area, Evans stated that he had run out of gas and was attempting to reach his sister, who he claimed lived in Trinton Circle, to ask for a ride. He claimed his vehicle had run out of fuel near Vinegar Hill and that his sister did not answer her door.
When informed of the report of someone attempting to gain entry to a residence, Evans acknowledged that he may have done so, but claimed he could not remember clearly. Trooper Crane subsequently gave Evans a ride to his father’s residence.
The next day, October 21, the victim came to the Sheriff’s Department to report damage to her door handle caused by Evans’s attempted entry.
Later that afternoon, Captain Fleetwood returned to the residence and examined the door handle. The affidavit notes that while there was no visible external damage, the door handle was “noticeably loose when operated.” The victim also mentioned an unconfirmed report that Evans had allegedly attempted to crawl through a neighbor’s window further down the street.
Based on the video evidence and the damaged door handle, Captain Fleetwood filed a probable cause affidavit, which led to a warrant being issued for Evan’s arrest on November 2.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
