INDIANA — The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) announced a bold, statewide initiative on Tuesday aimed at strengthening support networks for Hoosier children, to ensure every child has at least five supportive adults in their life by 2050.

The initiative, branded “FIVE by 50,” was unveiled at the 2025 KIDS COUNT Conference in Indianapolis. It seeks to intentionally connect children with multiple adults who can provide mentorship, guidance, and encouragement, drawing on research that shows a direct link between these relationships and improved child wellbeing.

“Strong connections do not just happen. They grow through intention, accountability, and teamwork,” said Tami Silverman, President and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute. “FIVE by 50 focuses on building up the support systems around kids, so every young person in Indiana has trusted adults who cheer them on, open doors, and help them pursue their own best future.”

IYI officials cited research indicating that children with multiple supportive adults exhibit better attendance, stronger mental health, and higher academic success.
A 2024 national analysis found that youth engaged in formal mentoring programs reported significantly fewer behavioral problems and lower symptoms of depression and social anxiety. Despite these benefits, it’s estimated that roughly one in three young people in the United States grows up without a mentor outside their immediate family.
The new initiative is designed to unify efforts across schools, after-school programs, and community organizations to establish a statewide network of support. Individuals and organizations interested in participating can sign up at iyi.org/FIVEby50.
