Barbara J. Houtchings, 90 of Mitchell, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at IU Health in Bedford.
She was born in Bedford on January 21, 1935, to Ernest Rogers and Janie (Turpen) Smith. Barbara married Robert Houtchings on July 14, 1956, and he preceded her in death in 2018. Barbara worked at RCA in Bloomington and Traveler’s in Orleans before becoming a homemaker. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Mitchell.
Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Shields of Mitchell, grandchildren, Kayley (Dylan Tanner) Magner of French Lick, Reece (Christina) Shields of Mitchell, and Tessa Zeher of Jasper, great-grandchildren, Chase (Jasmine) Zehr, Shyla Zehr, Kenna Zehr, Kyson Davenport, Charlotte Shields, Colton Shields, and Clinton Shields, great-great-grandchildren, Cedric Zehr, and Jaxson Zehr.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Carl Houtchings in 2008, and brother, Ernie Rogers.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home with Roger Davis officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home.
