According to Jasper Police Chief Chad Dick, the incident began around 11:30 a.m. when officers received a report of a suspicious person at a local auto dealership in Jasper. Officers soon located the suspect, later identified as Smith, driving a 2024 Toyota Tundra with false and fictitious license plates on US 231.

When the vehicle crossed into Huntingburg, a marked unit from the Huntingburg Police Department assisted in stopping the truck at the Northside Dollar General. An investigation determined that the pickup had been reported stolen from the Louisville, Kentucky, area in June of this year.

Smith was arrested and booked into the Dubois County Security Center on the motor vehicle theft charge. The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office and Huntingburg Police Department also assisted in the arrest.
