BPD Police involved in two-vehicle crash on US 50 and 18th Street

BEDFORD — A two-vehicle crash involving a Bedford Police Department vehicle responding to a call occurred on Tuesday, October 21st, at US 50 and 18th Street in Bedford.

The incident, which happened at approximately 8:31 a.m., involved an emergency vehicle operating its lights and sirens.

The crash, classified as a right-angle collision, resulted in three non-fatal injuries and an estimated damage cost between $25,001 and $50,000. Jackson’s Heavy Haul towed both vehicles from the scene.

The crash involved a City of Bedford Police 2023 Dodge Durango driven by Captain Nicholas ‘Drew’ Lemke and a 2022 GMC Acadia driven by Kagahn D. Whyte, 30, of Bedford. Captain Lemke, 36, was responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash and had the vehicle’s lights and sirens activated.

According to Investigative Bedford Police Department Major Jeremy Bridges, the collision occurred when Whyte advised that she “did not see or hear the police vehicle and proceeded into the intersection where she was struck.” Captain Lemke advised that he was responding to a call with his emergency lights and sirens activated, traveling the left-hand lane, and “did not see Whyte’s vehicle as it entered the intersection.” He was unable to avoid impact.

Three people were reported as injured, all with non-incapacitating injuries. Whyte and her four-year-old passenger were picked up by a family member, but Whyte later contacted the police, stating that both she and the four-year-old passenger were going to seek medical treatment due to head pain. Captain Lemke complained of elbow and lower arm pain and drove to the Occupational Health Office for treatment.
