INDIANA — Indiana’s court system is facing unprecedented security challenges, with threats against judges on the rise, according to Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush.

Chief Justice Rush recently stated that the security concerns and threats to the judiciary are the highest she has witnessed during her time on the bench.
“Court security, threats to the judiciary, in my time as a judge, are at an all-time high,” Rush said. “I have judges who hear cases and sentence people with no security in the courtroom. It’s just dangerous.”
Rush had advocated for matching grants to help counties fund improvements to courtroom security, but those funds were ultimately not included in the state’s final budget.
Despite the heightened risks and lack of specific funding, Rush praised Indiana’s courts, expressing pride that judges continue to handle tough cases while maintaining a focus on fairness and independence. She emphasized that the state’s justice system remains strong due to the efforts of its hardworking judges.
