Confused by road construction; INDOT clarifies who maintains your road

INDIANA The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recently took to social media to help Hoosier residents determine which agency is responsible for maintaining the state’s roadways. The clarification aims to speed up response times for maintenance reports amid ongoing construction and weather-related damage.

INDOT explained that maintenance responsibility is divided among three levels of government:

State Responsibility

INDOT is responsible for all state highways, U.S. highways, and interstates. Examples include major routes like State Road 67, U.S. 31, and the beltway I-465. Reports for issues on these high-traffic arteries should be directed to INDOT.

Local Responsibility

  • County Roads: These rural roadways are the exclusive jurisdiction of their respective county governments (e.g., the County Highway Department).
  • City Streets: Streets located within city limits that are not also a state highway are the responsibility of the local city government.

The department emphasized that knowing which agency maintains a specific road ensures that maintenance concerns reach the correct department quickly, leading to faster response times for necessary repairs.
