Lawrence County Highway Department seeking full-time truck driver

LAWRENCE CO. – The Lawrence County Highway Department has announced an opening for a full-time truck driver, a key position responsible for maintenance and materials handling for the county’s roadways. The job posting is available on the county’s channels and has also been listed on Indeed.

The position offers an hourly wage of $21.23 and a standard work schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the hauling of materials and performing various roadway maintenance and repair tasks. Core duties include:

  • Hauling Materials: Driving a truck to transport and deliver materials such as stone, asphalt, sand, and dirt to various work sites.
  • Road Maintenance: Inspecting and repairing road surfaces, patching potholes, hauling blacktop to the paver, and spreading gravel on unpaved roads.
  • Infrastructure Work: Removing and replacing culvert pipes.
  • General Maintenance: Cutting and clearing brush from right-of-ways, and replacing damaged or missing road signs.
  • Seasonal Duties: Performing winter services, including plowing snow and treating roadways with deicer, as well as mowing and stockpiling materials.

The role falls under the Labor, Trades and Crafts (LTC) category and is classified as non-exempt.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must meet several key requirements, with the most critical being possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a demonstrated safe driving record.

Other requirements include:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The ability to pass a drug test and medical examination.
  • Working knowledge of Department and OSHA safety policies.
  • The physical capability to perform assigned duties, including lifting and carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds.
  • The ability to relocate to Bedford, before starting work, is required.

The Truck Driver will report directly to a Foreman and should be able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment. Candidates must also be available to occasionally work extended hours, weekends, and evenings, and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
