Willis A. “Willie” Black, 69, of Seymour, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana in Columbus, with his family by his side.
Born on October 27, 1955, in Bowling Green, KY, to Willard Alden and Beatrice Getollia (Turner-Groce) Black, he was raised by Alvin and Pauline Smith, who he considered his parents. Willie was a 1973 graduate of Seymour High School and attended Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus, earning a degree in Legal Secretary. He worked as a driver for United Parcel Service UPS in Columbus for thirty-five years.
Willie loved and cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was a friend to all. His life was a testament to his love for his family and his hard work. He was an avid fisherman and woodworker. He loved building bird and doll houses; he enjoyed stone carving, painting, and working on stained glass; playing bingo and pool; and just being at home, spending time with his family.
Willie is survived by his wife, Cindy Black, of Seymour, IN; daughters, Shannon (Jeremy) Longbrake of Seymour, IN, and Heidi (Ryan) Kerns of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren, Heather Altepeter, Kylie (Matt) Fourman, Jamie Longbrake, Jocelyn Reynolds, and Elena Cooksey; five great-grandchildren, Gracelynn, Gabrielle, Taygen, Scarlett and Eleanor; his sister, Alice (Dale) Dooley, of Madison, IN; his brother, David Black, of Florida; and two nephews, Matt Followell and Eric Raes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Pauline Smith; his sisters, Evelyn Followell and Lisa Krahn; and his nephew, Patrick Followell.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, with Rev. Brian Stout Officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jon Pace and Scotty Wessel at the Burkholder Chapel of Thorne Family Funeral Homes in Seymour.
