COLUMBUS — A Columbus police officer is being commended for his swift and decisive actions that saved the life of an unresponsive infant late last month.
Sgt. Brandon Decker received a letter of commendation from Police Chief Steve Norman on Thursday for the incident that occurred on September 26th.

According to the Columbus Police Department, Decker was dispatched to an apartment on Salzburg Drive following an emergency call about an unresponsive baby. Upon arrival, officers found the infant was not breathing and appeared lethargic.
Sgt. Decker immediately worked to clear any potential obstructions from the baby’s airway. When initial attempts failed, he administered several back blows, which ultimately proved successful. Police say the baby began to breathe and cry shortly after Decker’s intervention. Medics arrived on the scene and took over care of the infant.
On Thursday, the baby and the grateful family met with Sgt. Decker to personally thank him for his life-saving efforts.
Chief Norman officially presented the letter of commendation, praising the officer. Norman stated he was proud to have Sgt. Decker on the force and lauded the “work he’s doing to help our community.”
