Man sentenced to five years for battery on Bartholomew County deputy

COLUMBUS A man involved in an incident with a Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy last year has been sentenced to prison.

Bartholomew County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Benjamine sentenced Pongi Peden to a five-year sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Prosecutors filed charges against Peden for battery against a public safety official, resisting law enforcement, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Peden was stopped by deputies near West Goeller Boulevard and Jonathan Moore Pike in June 2024. According to police reports, Peden refused to comply with the deputies’ orders, and during the resulting scuffle, he struck one of the officers. He was also found to be driving under the influence.
