Adoption drive across the heartland: Best Friends Society celebrates tri-state no-kill commitment

INDIANA – Best Friends Animal Society, a leading national organization dedicated to achieving a no-kill status nationwide, has announced a massive tri-state adoption event on Saturday, October 18th.

The event is a direct celebration of the recent statewide no-kill proclamations issued by the Governors of Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas. These proclamations signify a firm commitment across the heartland states to save the lives of every healthy and treatable dog and cat in local shelters.

More than 2,500 pets from 38 participating shelters and rescue groups across the three states will be available for adoption. Adoption fees for this special event will be $50 or less, courtesy of Best Friends Animal Society.

Governors’ Support Hailed as Pivotal Step

The proclamations, recently announced by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, Indiana Governor Mike Braun, and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, mark a crucial step in pet lifesaving efforts.

“Having the support of these Governors shows us that the no-kill movement is gaining momentum in the Heartland,” said Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. “No-kill is about getting pets out of shelters and into loving homes, not about warehousing pets… shelters and rescue groups cannot do this work alone, and one of the best ways people can help is by choosing to adopt rather than purchase their next pet.”

Castle stressed that adoption is one of the most powerful actions the public can take to save lives. She also encouraged those who cannot adopt to consider fostering, volunteering, or sharing adoptable pets on social media.
