Artesians advance with 2-0 win over Stars

MARTINSVILLE – Martinsville advanced to the Class 3A sectional semifinal with a 2-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during girls high school soccer action on Tuesday night.

The Artesians (2-15) will face the winner between Terre Haute North (5-9-2) and Bloomington South (11-2-3) in the first semifinal on Thursday. Bloomington North (8-6-2) will battle Terre Haute South (13-4) in the second semifinal. The championship is set for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Martinsville, which had scored only five goals all season, got on the board at 21:13 in the first half on a shot by Mattie Hayes. Bella George added the insurance goal with 13:34 remaining in the second half.

“It was a close game the whole 80 minutes,” BNL coach Bret Roberts said. “There really were not a whole lot of shots on either side. Martinsville was able to take advantage of the shots they did have, and we weren’t able to get ours in.

”I felt like we ended our season with dignity and were able to walk off the field with our heads held high. It really could’ve been anyone’s game. Jayella Filler was a standout defender tonight and that is not her normal spot. I appreciate her stepping up and playing in a spot she is not used to. Rachael Barr was dominate in the midfield and was a big ball winner. She also had several through balls to the forwards. Jolynn Wilson finished out her career with a strong game in the midfield as well. She created opportunities for us on offense and helped a lot on defense as well.”

BNL, which has not won a postseason match since 2017, finished the season 4-11-2.
