GALENA – Paige Voigtschild finished second overall as Bedford North Lawrence claimed fourth place in the Hoosier Hills Conference during girls high school cross country action on Saturday.
The Stars totaled 80 team points. Floyd Central ran away with the team crown with 27 points, followed by Seymour (69) and Jennings County (77).
Voigtschild crossed the line in 18:52.00. Floyd’s Noel Nifong was the champion in 18:31.10.
Other top finishers for BNL included Madison Chandler (17th in 21:07.80) and Claire Voigtschild (21st in 21:21.70).
“I’m really excited about the progress these girls are making,” BNL coach Amy Greenan said. “Four out of our top five had career PRs. We were really shooting for third, but just missed it. Paige ran another smart race and is still getting faster. We’re looking forward to getting everything dialed in for sectional.”
In the boys race, BNL finished sixth with 160 points. Floyd Central dominated the meet with 28 to win the title.
BNL’s top finishers included Eli McFarland (26th in 18:04.30), Kason Gulley (34th in 18:34.50) and Hayden Rich (35th in 18:35.40).
“We made some progress today,” BNL coach Nick Boyd said. “We had a few nice races from Kason Gulley and Hayden Rich, and Sam Strauser is working back into form. Ultimately, we have two weeks to prepare for the sectional and will continue training to try and make the top five teams. All of the practice races are over at this point and now it is tournament time. We will see what the next two weeks bring and be ready to toe the line at BNL.”
Floyd Central’s Gannon Mays was the individual champion in 16:15.40.
BNL will compete in the IHSAA sectional on Oct. 18.
