During the stop, Deputy James Carpenter and his K9 partner, Mater, conducted a free air sniff around the vehicle. Mater alerted the deputies, prompting a search of the van. Inside, police located an unloaded handgun.

Investigators determined that the handgun’s serial number had been altered, and the weapon was reported as stolen from Daviess County.

The driver, identified as Nickolas McBride, was subsequently arrested and charged with Level 5 felony theft. The Greene County Sheriff’s Department has stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Those arrested are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
