BEDFORD – Somebody didn’t shuffle the cards very well. Bedford North Lawrence dealt itself a lot of aces.

Aces are the best starting pair in Texas Hold ‘Em, and the Stars turned over several of those premium hands while blasting their way to a three-set sweep of Eastern Greene on Monday night. BNL hammered out 14 aces from the service line while posting a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 victory over the Thunderbirds.

Jenna Allen was the catalyst with 7 aces while Trinidy Bailey (4) and Sammie Gratzer (3) also ripped free points from the back line.

“We did serve tough, we served well,” BNL coach Aaron Wagoner said. “They served super aggressive.”

When the Thunderbirds (7-14) did get the ball in play, Gratzer usually put in away. She was the typical force at the net with 17 kills and 7 blocks. Allen added 6 kills. Adalynn Bailey paced the back row with 12 digs.

Eastern threatened to extend the match with an early lead in the third set. BNL pulled even at 18-18, then erupted with a finishing flurry. Gratzer smacked down two kills, Allen poked home another, Trinidy Bailey served one of her aces, Adalynn Bailey blocked down a point, and Gratzer capped the seven-point run with a final kill.

“They got a little comfortable, not staying disciplined,” Wagoner said. “You can get by with that some games, and this was one where we were able to get through it. There are some games we can’t afford to do that.

“It’s good to have a win, no matter what. We didn’t want it to show up as an L, that’s for sure. We’ll take them.”

BNL (12-11) will visit Columbus North on Tuesday.
