Police incident in Bloomington ends with mental health detention

BLOOMINGTON– A standoff that lasted over five hours on Wednesday evening concluded with law enforcement taking a man into custody for a mental health emergency detention.

The incident began when the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a court order for a subject at a residence on South Bernard Drive.

At approximately 3:05 p.m., Monroe County deputies arrived at the residence and saw the individual, along with a possible firearm. The person was non-compliant, refusing to exit the home or communicate with officers. Deputies secured a perimeter and obtained a warrant to enter the residence.

After more than three hours of failed attempts to establish communication, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Bloomington Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) at 6:21 p.m. The CIRT team deployed specialized tactics and successfully took the individual into custody at 8:53 p.m.

The individual was then transferred to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office personnel and transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital to fulfill the court-ordered mental health evaluation.
