County conducts emergency preparedness exercise for National Preparedness Month

BEDFORD – Lawrence County officials conducted a successful hazardous materials incident exercise on September 12 as part of National Preparedness Month, an initiative aimed at enhancing community readiness for a hazardous material spill.

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer

According to Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer, who directed the exercise, it was a success. “We learned a lot,” she said, adding that she will meet with local organizations who participated to “go over what we learned and how to make improvements and adjustments to our response.”

Luchauer encouraged residents to take proactive steps to prepare for emergencies, such as creating family communication plans, preparing disaster kits, and staying informed about local risks.

“God forbid this happens here, but I am glad we will be prepared,” said Commissioner President Rodney Fish, who praised those who participated and Luchauer for her hard work.
