Bicyclist airlifted to hospital after collision with off-duty officer

WASHINGTON CO. – A bicyclist was seriously injured and airlifted to a Louisville hospital on Sunday after a collision with an off-duty Salem police officer.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., the Salem Police Department requested the Indiana State Police to investigate a crash at the intersection of Old State Road 56 and North Canton Road.

According to a preliminary investigation by Trooper Brett Walters, Officer Tony England, who was off-duty and driving a department cruiser, was attempting to make a left turn onto North Canton Road when he struck Terry L. Eagle, 60, who was riding his bicycle eastbound on Old State Road 56.

Eagle was first transported by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Salem before being airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition.

Authorities do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing.
