Salem pounces on BNL for 4-1 triumph

BNL’s Asher Thompson posted the lone win for the Stars during a 4-1 loss at Salem on Thursday.

SALEM – Salem swept the doubles while pouncing on Bedford North Lawrence 4-1 during boys high school tennis action on Thursday.

Asher Thompson posted the lone win for the Stars (7-8) at No.2 singles. He recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brady Davis.

“He played a kid who could whack the ball,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “Asher has grown to be able to hit fast-paced shots and slow them down, to mess up the rhythm of his opponents.”

Salem’s Griffin Richards rolled past Jackson Corey 6-0, 6-1 at No.1 singles, while Carter Richards rebounded from a tough first set to stop Wyatt Corbin 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No.3.

In doubles, Carson Albertson and Landon Irwin conquered Neal Patel and Orion Hill 6-3, 6-4 at No.1. Gunner Walton and Luke Ingram handled Micah Carter and Braxton Fugate 6-1, 6-1 at No.2.

“Doubles was in their own heads tonight,” Dillman said. “They’ve gotten shaky these past few matches and it’s time to lock back in with them. They’ve been our bread and butter this whole season.

“Overall, this loss isn’t on any of the players. This is on me, the coach. I wasn’t able to get my players match ready. They have done well handling whatever has been thrown their way, regardless if it’s on or off the court, they constantly look for ways to get past it and get better. This team keeps me going and drives me to constantly get better when we falter.”

BNL will host Jeffersonville in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament on Monday.
