WASHINGTON – Former Washington Hatchet boys basketball coach Gene Miiller was honored with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award at Friday night’s Homecoming game, the highest distinction given by the Governor of Indiana.

Miiller retired last season after a 50-year career in high school basketball, ending with a record of 762 wins and 383 losses. He previously coached at Kankakee Valley, Vincennes Lincoln, and Lafayette Jeff before taking over the Washington program for 20 years.

His coaching accolades include 21 conference championships, 29 sectional titles, 8 regionals, and 4 semi-states. He led Vincennes Lincoln to a state runner-up finish in 1984 and coached Washington to three Class 3A state championships in 2008, 2010, and 2011.
A member of both the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Wabash College Hall of Fame, Miiller was also the recipient of the John Wooden Legacy Award in 2024. He remains the second-winningest active coach in Indiana history.
