Burn bans enacted in Orange, Spencer, and Washington counties

INDIANA – Due to abnormally dry conditions across Indiana, burn bans have been enacted in Orange, Spencer, and Washington counties. These local restrictions are implemented to prevent wildfires.

A burn ban is a local restriction on open burning that is declared by county officials, not the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS). These bans typically prohibit activities such as campfires, bonfires, and the burning of yard waste due to dry or hazardous fire conditions.

While the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that much of Indiana is experiencing abnormally dry conditions, the specifics of a burn ban can vary by county. Residents in the affected areas must check with their local county emergency management agency or the IDHS website at in.gov/dhs/burnban for the current status and detailed rules.
