BNL advances to final in Edgewood Invite

BNL’s Braxton Fugate and the Stars advanced to the championship round in the Edegwood Invitational.

ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence advanced to the final round of the Edgewood Invitational during boys high school tennis action on Saturday.

The Stars conquered Edgewood 4-1 in the first round. BNL’s clash with Greencastle (which topped Owen Valley in the other semifinal) in the finale was suspended by rain and will be completed on Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.

BNL swept the doubles against the Mustangs. Orion Hill and Neal Patel cruised past Sammy Paul and Ryne Klinger 6-3, 6-1 at No.1, while Micah Carter and Braxton Fugate rolled Zane Walcott and Liam Kersten 6-2, 6-3 at No.2.

“I got compliments from the other coaches about the energy they brought,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “It was immediately off the bus, the team was energized and ready to dominate. Doubles has been leading us to victory each time we win, they did it again today.

“Orion has really stepped up, he was getting his teammates going and constantly talking on the court. Micah and Braxton worked well together, they complement each other. Braxton does well on the baseline and Micah’s up at net to put it away.”

BNL won the lower singles as Asher Thompson toppled Chris Zelhof-Arriaga 6-2, 6-0 at No.2, and Wyatt Corbin decked Landon East 6-2, 6-3 at No.3.

The final against Greencastle was suspended with most matches through the first set.

”This rainout has both pros and cons,” Dillman said. “We get time to get our energy back, but so does Greencastle. It’s up to the players if they come locked in.”

The Stars (7-5) will host Paoli on Monday.
