Violation of probation terms sends Austin man to prison

BEDFORD A 44-year-old Austin man, Daniel Steward, was sentenced to the Indiana Department of Correction on September 3, 2025, after a judge found he had violated the terms of his probation.

Daniel Steward

Lawrence Superior Court I Judge John M. Plummer III handed down the sentencing.

Steward had previously pleaded guilty to strangulation, a Level 6 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, as part of a negotiated plea agreement. He was initially sentenced to a total of 910 days, with 870 days suspended and placed on supervised probation for 545 days.

However, after failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his probation, his suspended sentence was revoked. Judge Plummer ordered Steward to serve the complete 870-day sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with credit for time already served in jail.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Cummings

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Cummings commented on the case, stating, “This Defendant was allowed to stay in the community and work with probation to rehabilitate his life. However, this Defendant was ignoring the terms and conditions that he had agreed to. Prison was the right result for this Defendant.”
