BEDFORD— A Heltonville man, Logan G. Smith, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The arrest followed a traffic stop initiated by Indiana State Trooper Logan McDowell on May 23, 2025.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Trooper McDowell was on patrol around 11:30 p.m. when he saw a vehicle with a headlight out on Lincoln Avenue. After the car turned, the trooper followed it and initiated a stop at the roundabout near John Williams Boulevard. The vehicle pulled into the parking lot of Kat’s Performing Arts Studio.
Trooper McDowell, assisted by Captain Fleetwood of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, approached the driver, identified as Logan G. Smith. The trooper noticed that Smith was bleeding from his hand, had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol. When questioned, Smith said he was coming from Shorty’s Bar and Grill and had consumed “Like two beers” about 35 minutes prior.
During a field sobriety test, Smith displayed several signs of impairment, including a lack of smooth pursuit in his eyes, taking the wrong number of steps, and swaying. A portable breath test was offered, but Smith was unable to provide a proper sample. Smith then consented to a blood draw at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
Toxicology results received on June 26 showed a blood ethanol level of 0.201 g/100 mL. Smith was issued a warning for the headlight and picked up by a sober driver. After receiving the results of the toxicology report, a warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest. He was detained on August 29th on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI endangerment.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
