Mitchell man steals car, crashes car and is arrested

BEDFORD – A Mitchell man was arrested and faces multiple charges after allegedly stealing a car and crashing it just a few miles from his home.

Kaden M. Williams

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer J. Landon Jones, the incident began on Friday, August 22, when a woman reported her maroon 2005 Honda Pilot stolen from a daycare on 15th Street. The victim told police she had left her car unlocked and running while she went inside to pick up her daughter. She also told officers that before arriving at the daycare, she saw a male and a female arguing near the intersection of 15th and G Streets. The male yelled at her, which frightened her. She later identified the man as Kaden Williams from a photograph.

Earlier that day, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Bedford Police had responded to a disturbance at the City of Bedford’s Street Department garage. An employee told police that a male with a similar description to Williams was yelling and cursing at him near the intersection of 15th and H streets. Another employee also confirmed that a male, whom he identified as Williams, had made threats toward him.

While Officer Jones was speaking with the victim, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car accident at Pumphouse Road and the Buddha Bypass at 1:37 p.m. Deputies who responded to the scene confirmed the wrecked vehicle was the victim’s stolen Honda Pilot. The car was unoccupied, and an extensive search was conducted with the help of an Indiana State Police helicopter and a K9 unit, but Williams was not found.

Later that evening, at approximately 6:55 p.m., Williams arrived at the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office with his father. When questioned by officers, Williams invoked his Fifth Amendment right and requested a lawyer, ending the interview.

Officer Jones noted in the affidavit that Williams had extensive scratches on his arms, cuts and red marks under his left eye, and bruising on his nose. He also had a distinct chemical odor, similar to that of an airbag deployment. A cell phone was found inside the wrecked vehicle, and officers confirmed it belonged to Williams. DNA swabs of blood found on the airbag were collected and will be compared to Williams’s DNA.

Williams was placed under arrest and remanded to the Lawrence County Jail.
