BLOOMINGTON — A man was killed Friday evening after being struck by a freight train on a bridge over Interstate 69 on Bloomington’s west side.
According to the Bloomington Police Department, officers responded around 5:15 p.m. to the railroad bridge located between the Bloomfield Road and Third Street overpasses.
Responding officers found a man with severe injuries dead at the scene. A bicycle that had also been struck by the train was found nearby.
The train’s engineer told investigators he saw the man walk onto the tracks and sounded the horn while initiating an emergency stop. However, the man did not move, and the train was unable to stop in time.
Authorities had not released the victim’s identity, pending family notification.
The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
Officials have repeatedly warned the public about the dangers of walking on or near train tracks, noting that it is both illegal and extremely hazardous. Trains cannot stop quickly, and Bloomington has seen multiple fatalities involving pedestrians on the tracks on the west side of the city in recent years.
