SHOALS– The Martin County Council is holding a public hearing today, August 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Martin County Community Building to discuss the adoption of a new county wheel tax and vehicle excise tax. County officials say these taxes are necessary to ensure the county remains eligible for state funding for road and bridge projects.
Recent legislative changes in Indiana have reduced the state’s Community Crossings fund and require counties to have a wheel tax to access new Lane Mile Distribution funds. Martin County has received more than $7.7 million in state funding since 2016 for road projects, with the county providing approximately $1.8 million in matching funds. The proposed taxes would help secure future state funding, as well as provide revenue for local highway construction and maintenance.
The public hearing offers residents an opportunity to ask questions or voice concerns before the council’s vote.
