76-year-old Bloomington woman killed after being struck by a vehicle

BLOOMINGTON — A 76-year-old woman, identified as Dorothy Kent of Bloomington, was killed after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of West Third Street and South Liberty Drive.

Bloomington Police Department officers responded to the scene at approximately 4:05 p.m. to find the pedestrian trapped under a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Bloomington Fire Department worked to extricate Kent, who was then transported to a nearby hospital.

Kent was pronounced deceased in the emergency department at 4:53 p.m.

The driver of the Jeep, a 77-year-old Bloomington woman, told police she was turning from Liberty Drive onto Third Street on a yellow light. She claimed she didn’t see any oncoming traffic and began her turn, at which point she felt her vehicle hit something. The driver cooperated with investigators and showed no signs of impairment.

Witnesses at the scene told officers they saw Kent walking across West Third Street when the Jeep began its turn and struck her.

The investigation is ongoing, with the Monroe County Coroner’s Office scheduling an autopsy. Police are also seeking video footage from nearby businesses to aid their investigation.
