Oversized load snags utility lines, causes outages east of Loogootee

LOOGOOTEE – A semi-truck hauling an oversized load caused significant disruption Wednesday morning when it brought down multiple utility poles along U.S. Highway 50, east of Loogootee.

The incident, reported around 9:00 a.m. near the 11800 block of East US 50, resulted in power outages and disrupted phone and internet service in the affected area.

According to police, the driver of a Peterbilt semi became entangled in overhead lines, damaging two poles. One pole belonged to RTC Communications, while Daviess-Martin County REMC owned the other.

Crews from both utility companies responded quickly to begin repairs. Deputies were on scene to provide traffic control while workers replaced the damaged poles. Daviess-Martin County REMC noted that the outage also affected its office phone lines, which were temporarily rerouted to an after-hours call center.

Repairs took several hours.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
