Indiana DNR announces fall and winter urban forestry events

INDIANA – The Indiana DNR Community and Urban Forestry program staff has announced a schedule of upcoming fall and winter events, including a Big Tree tour and several Tree Steward workshops across the state.

NWI Big Tree Tour

In a partnership with CommuniTree, DNR will host a Northwest Indiana Big Tree Tour on September 6. This bus and walking tour will visit two state champion trees and a nature preserve. CommuniTree, an alliance dedicated to improving the urban canopy in northwestern Indiana, is a collaborative partnership supported by Great Lakes Urban Forestry and NIPSCO, who are sponsoring the event.

The Indiana Big Tree Register, maintained by the DNR Division of Forestry, is a list of the largest known specimens of each native tree species in Indiana. More information on the register, including an interactive map, is available online.

Registration for the NWI Big Tree Tour is now open.

Tree Stewards Workshops

DNR has also released the dates and locations for its fall Tree Steward workshops, which aim to educate, empower, and connect participants with urban forestry practices and volunteer opportunities. The dates and locations are:

  • September 11 & 12: Goshen, click here to register
  • October 11 & 18: Muncie, click here to register
  • November 6 & 7: Evansville, click here to register

The Tree Stewards program teaches the basics of urban tree care and advocacy. After completing a workshop, attendees are asked to volunteer 15 hours of service in their local community to apply their new knowledge. More information about the curriculum is available online.
