Oppressive heat continues across Indiana; Heat Advisory extended

INDIANA– Forecasters are warning that the oppressive heat gripping much of Indiana is expected to persist through at least tonight, posing a continued risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis, while actual temperatures are predicted to remain in the low 90s today, the high humidity will push heat index values up to 103 degrees Fahrenheit during the hottest part of the day. This follows extreme conditions experienced yesterday, with Terre Haute recording a heat index of 110 degrees.

The Heat Advisory for affected areas has been extended until 8 p.m. EDT tonight, Friday, July 25, 2025.

The NWS emphasizes that these high temperatures have the potential to cause serious heat-related illnesses. Residents are strongly urged to take proactive measures to protect themselves and vulnerable individuals:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Check in on family members and neighbors, especially the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat stress.
  • Never leave people or pets unattended in a closed vehicle under these conditions, as interior temperatures can rise rapidly to dangerous levels.

For those in need of a place to cool off, resources are available. Residents can call 211 to find a nearby cooling station or shelter.

Stay safe and take all necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat.
