BICKNELL– Street improvement projects are steadily advancing in Bicknell, with significant work continuing on East 4th Street and South Main Street. Mayor Thomas Estabrook provided an update on the progress, noting visible changes across the city.

On East 4th Street, crews are currently laying base rock, starting from Freelandville and moving eastward. Additional base work is also underway near Dant Boulevard and Thomas Street. Mayor Estabrook stated that once this base layer is complete, the next phase will involve installing new curbs and gutters.
Progress on South Main Street is further along, with all curbing already finished. New driveway approaches are actively being poured, and sidewalk grading is in progress, enhancing pedestrian accessibility and overall street aesthetics.
In a separate but related development aimed at city revitalization, Mayor Estabrook announced that demolition of the former D&B gas station is expected to begin next week. The city acquired the property earlier this month after conducting necessary environmental testing. The demolition will involve the removal of existing buildings and pavement, followed by the extraction of underground fuel tanks.
The cleanup efforts at the former gas station site are being funded by the Knox County Redevelopment Commission, which also played a crucial role in helping the city secure its Community Crossings grant for the broader infrastructure improvements.
These projects underscore Bicknell’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its residents.
