Scam Alert: Prosecutor Sam Arp warns of fake DMV traffic ticket notices

LAWRENCE CO. – Lawrence County Prosecutor Sam Arp is urging residents to be on high alert for a deceptive text message scam falsely claiming to be from the “Indiana Department of Vehicles (DMV)” regarding outstanding traffic tickets.

Lawrence County Prosecutor Sam Arp

Prosecutor Arp explicitly stated, “Please be aware, this is a SCAM. DO NOT reply to this message.”

The fraudulent message, which has been circulating, issues a “Final Notice” threatening “Enforcement Penalties” beginning July 24, 2025. It falsely states, “Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. In accordance with Indiana Code 15C-16.003, if you do not complete payment by July 23, 2025, we will take the following actions:”

The scam then lists a series of intimidating threats, including:

  1. Reporting to a “DMV violation database”
  2. Suspending vehicle registration starting July 24
  3. Suspending driving privileges for 30 days
  4. Transferring to a toll booth and charging a 35% service fee
  5. Prosecution and negative impacts on credit scores

The message concludes with a prompt to “Pay Now” to “avoid license suspension and further legal disputes.”

Authorities emphasize that this message is not legitimate. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), the correct state agency, does not communicate official notices or demand immediate payment for outstanding tickets via unsolicited text messages, especially with such aggressive tactics and short deadlines.

If you receive a similar message, do not click on any links, do not reply, and do not provide any personal or financial information. It is recommended to delete the message immediately. If you have concerns about a legitimate traffic ticket or your driving record, contact the Indiana BMV directly through their official website or by phone.
