BEDFORD– The Lawrence County Highway Department has announced upcoming road improvements on John Kern Lane, with a chip and seal project scheduled to enhance the road surface. Residents are advised to anticipate temporary inconveniences and are asked to minimize traffic in the area during the procedure.

The project will commence on Thursday, July 24, when crews will apply a primer to the gravel surface. This primer is crucial for the chip and seal process and requires a full 24 hours to dry and properly set.
Residents are strongly cautioned that this primer is highly adhesive to tires. To prevent material from being transported onto vehicles, the Highway Department recommends using the shortest possible route from residences to either Avoca Eureka Road or Tripleton Pike. Motorists are urged to keep travel on John Kern Lane to an absolute minimum on Thursday, July 24.
Should primer get on a vehicle, the department suggests using warm, soapy water for removal. In more stubborn cases, P.B. Blaster is effective.
The second phase of the project will take place on Monday, July 28. On this day, crews will apply a binding agent and then lay the gravel, completing the chip and seal process. This part of the project is expected to be completed by the end of the day, and John Kern Lane will be fully ready for travel once the work is finished on Monday.
“We understand this presents an inconvenience for residents,” said Brian Sowder, Lawrence County Highway Department Superintendent. “However, this improvement will provide a much better road surface for your home.”
The department reiterates its request for patience and cooperation from residents during this time, with a particular emphasis on minimizing travel on John Kern Lane this Thursday, July 24.
