Bloomington sees rising COVID-19 levels amidst potential summer surge

BLOOMINGTON – COVID-19 levels in Bloomington are currently high and on an upward trend, signaling what many public health experts believe could be the start of a summer surge. This local increase stands out against broader Indiana data, where most areas report low COVID-19 activity.

The latest national and Indiana COVID-19 data, sourced from WastewaterSCAN  and updated through July 11, 2025, indicate that while Bloomington is experiencing “High” COVID-19 levels, North Jeffersonville is at a “Medium” level, with all other participating wastewater treatment plants reporting “Low” concentrations.

Nationally, COVID-19 levels are categorized as “Medium” with no significant trend. The median concentration across the country is approximately 27,937 copies per gram (cp/g), a slight increase from around 25,200 cp/g in June. Over the past three weeks, an overwhelming 95% of samples have tested positive. For comparison, the median concentration in June 2024 was slightly higher at 34,700 cp/g.

Sequencing data shows that LP.8.1 is the most abundant variant across all sites at 33.2%, followed by XFG at 24.6%. NB.1.8.1 (Nimbus variant) only accounts for 7.5% of sequenced samples.
