BEDFORD – Vehicle theft remains a persistent issue, with thousands of cars disappearing each year, often in mere seconds. However, local law enforcement and community safety advocates stress that many of these thefts are entirely preventable with a few straightforward precautions.

“It takes less than 60 seconds for a thief to steal an unlocked car,” stated a local police spokesperson. “Don’t make it easy for them. We need to work together as a community to reduce vehicle theft significantly.”
To help residents protect their vehicles, authorities and safety experts recommend the following key prevention tips:
- Always lock your doors and take your keys, even for quick stops. This is the most fundamental step to deter opportunistic thieves.
- Never leave your car running unattended. Even for a moment, an idling vehicle is an open invitation for theft.
- Park in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible. Thieves prefer the cover of darkness and secluded locations.
- Please don’t leave valuables in plain sight; hide or remove them. Visible items, such as electronics, bags, or even loose change, can attract unwanted attention.
- Use anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks or alarms. These can serve as both deterrents and additional layers of security.
Community members are also urged to be vigilant. “If you see suspicious activity, report it immediately,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing that proactive reporting plays a crucial role in preventing crime. By adopting these simple habits, residents can significantly decrease their risk of becoming a victim of vehicle theft.
