Man fatally shot during altercation in rural Sullivan County

SULLIVAN CO. – A Prairieton man was fatally shot early Thursday morning following an altercation on private property in rural Sullivan County.

The incident occurred near the 800 North block of Shelburn around 1:00 a.m.

Indiana State Police confirm that 30-year-old Ryan Gehring of Prairieton was allegedly trespassing when a confrontation ensued with the property owner. Authorities state that Gehring was repeatedly asked to leave the premises. A physical altercation reportedly broke out, during which Gehring sustained a gunshot wound.

Gehring was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday, July 13th, to determine the exact cause of death.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Once completed, the findings will be forwarded to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office for review and a determination on potential charges.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
