INDIANA— Walmart is recalling approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail 64‑ounce stainless steel water bottles after reports that their screw‑on lids can “forcefully eject,” striking users and causing injuries, including two cases of permanent vision loss, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday.

According to the recall notice, the bottles were sold nationwide and online since 2017 for about $15 under model number 83‑662, identified on the packaging. The silver-colored bottles feature a black screw‑cap lid and display the Ozark Trail logo.
The hazard arises when the bottles are used to store carbonated drinks, perishable beverages like milk or juice, or food. Over time, pressure can build, and upon opening the cap, the lid may eject with force, posing “serious impact and laceration hazards,” the CPSC said.
Walmart has received three injury reports, including two incidents in which the lid struck users in the eye, resulting in permanent blindness, and another causing unspecified facial injuries.
Consumers are advised to stop using the affected bottles immediately and return them to any Walmart store for a full refund. Assistance is also available via Walmart’s customer service hotline.
The recall emphasizes that the model number appears only on the packaging—not on the bottle itself—and includes bottles sold in-store and online.
In a joint statement, Walmart and the manufacturer said they are cooperating fully with the CPSC to remove the recalled products from circulation, warn consumers, and ensure refunds are issued.
