Field-Office closures create identity verification issues in southern Indiana

Residents in rural Indiana communities are facing increased challenges verifying their identity for Social Security services following recent field office closures and updates to ID requirements.

Applicants must now complete more rigorous in-person or digital identity checks. In regions where Social Security Administration (SSA) offices have closed, individuals must travel long distances or use unfamiliar online systems, often without access to reliable internet or transportation.

These difficulties have delayed benefit approvals and limited access to critical services, especially among older adults and low-income residents. Without sufficient alternatives, many applicants are unable to meet documentation requirements in a timely manner.

The SSA has begun rolling out mobile support units and expanded online resources, but usage remains low due to technology barriers and unfamiliarity. Local officials are encouraging the deployment of temporary service centers in underserved counties.
