INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is calling on the public to assist in monitoring the state’s wild turkey population by participating in the 2025 Turkey Brood Count. The annual count runs from July 1 through August 31.
The DNR is asking Hoosiers to report their observations of turkey hens accompanied by poults (young turkeys), as well as hens seen without poults. Poults began hatching in May, and new broods will continue to emerge across Indiana over the next couple of months.

Reporting observations is quick and easy. It takes only a few minutes online, and no login is required.
Data collected from these brood reports, which have been gathered since 1993, are crucial for calculating the annual Wild Turkey Production Index. This index provides biologists with vital information about the overall size of the wild turkey population, directly informing wildlife management strategies for the species.
In 2024, the DNR received over 3,000 reports from all 92 counties in Indiana, and officials are hoping for an even greater response this year. The DNR expressed appreciation for the public’s continued observations and contributions to this vital conservation effort.
