Shoals will lose only grocery store as JayC announces July 31 closure

SHOALS—The town of Shoals is set to lose its only dedicated grocery store. The local JayC Food Store, owned by Kroger, will permanently close its doors on Thursday, July 31st.

The closure follows Kroger’s earlier announcement that it plans to close 60 stores over the next 18 months. While the only other Indiana stores currently on the closure list are located in South Bend and Elkhart, the Shoals JayC location at 201 High St., just a few blocks off US 50 and near the town hall, post office, and county government offices, will also cease operations.

The closure will leave residents with limited grocery options within the town. While the Dollar General store in Shoals does stock some groceries, the nearest full-service grocery store will now be in Loogootee, approximately a 10-minute drive away.

This change is expected to significantly impact the convenience and accessibility of food for Shoals residents.
