INDIANA— As the Fourth of July holiday week begins, the Indiana State Police (ISP) is urging drivers to prioritize safety on the roads, anticipating record-breaking travel numbers. Officials project that over 72 million people will travel to celebrate the holiday nationwide, with a significant portion opting for road trips.

AAA forecasts that 1.9 million Hoosiers alone will travel 50 miles or more during the “holiday period,” which spans from Saturday, June 28th, through Sunday, July 6th.

Sergeant Matt Ames with the Indiana State Police emphasized the importance of safety during this peak travel time. “This is a very trying time for us, as we’re doing traffic enforcement with the Indiana State Police. We call it the 100 Deadliest Days from Memorial Day to Labor Day,” said Ames.
The “100 deadliest days” refers to the period when teen drivers are statistically three times more likely to be involved in a fatal car crash, according to AAA data.
“Let’s be safe out there, let’s make sure we’re obeying the posted speed limits, not driving while distracted and we are buckled up the entire time,” Sergeant Ames urged. “Let’s have the safest 100 days we can here in the state of Indiana.”
