BLOOMINGTON – Samuel Ujdak today announced his resignation as Chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Party of Indiana, effective 11:59 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2025. In a heartfelt statement, Ujdak cited personal developments throughout the year that have made it clear he no longer possesses the capacity to serve with the necessary commitment and clarity.

Ujdak, who has been openly queer during his tenure —a rarity for political party chairs in Indiana —emphasized the need for privacy during this transition. He urged the community to continue and expand upon the “good work many of you are already doing.”
In his parting message, Ujdak underscored the importance of “tangible, material direct action that immediately improves the quality of life of our neighbors.” He implored party members to “Feed the hungry. Clothe the naked. Shelter the unhoused,” asserting that these actions transcend creeds and beliefs.
He also cautioned against the tendency to “circle the wagons” and turn inward during difficult times, referencing ongoing international conflicts and domestic issues like increased ICE presence and challenges to gender related care. “Do not despair. Do not turn inward,” he urged.
Ujdak stressed that the primary responsibility of supporters, volunteers, candidates, elected officials, and party officers is to their constituency, not to economic interests, policy lobbies, or independent caucuses. “You owe the people everything. They cast the votes. Their lives are touched every day by your work, your money, and your choices. Act compassionately, think selflessly,” he stated.
Reflecting on his eight years of service to the Monroe County Democratic Party, Ujdak spoke of giving “a great deal of my blood, sweat, and tears,” often from a background position. He revealed, “At this time, I am exhausted. I have a lot of healing to do.” Citing 27 years of involvement in Indiana politics, Ujdak considers this a “retirement from public life within that body politic.”
Despite his departure, Ujdak offered to remain available for advice, as a sounding board, or simply a listening ear, acknowledging the toll political life can take. He concluded his statement with a message of unity and solidarity: “Love each other. Love yourselves. Protect trans kids.”
