BEDFORD—A Bedford woman was arrested Thursday night after multiple calls to law enforcement regarding ongoing disturbances at an apartment complex in the city.
Kassy-Ann McCarty was taken into custody by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on preliminary charges of intimidation, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct. Deputies had previously responded to the Maple Ridge Apartments several times earlier in the day due to complaints about McCarty’s behavior.
Deputy C. Pruett arrived on the scene around 10 p.m. after dispatch received another report of a dispute involving McCarty. Captain H. Fleetwood and Indiana State Trooper L. McDowell also responded to the incident.
According to the affidavit, residents reported that McCarty had been yelling at neighbors, making threats, and creating a scene throughout the day. One resident said her daughter was afraid to go inside the building because of McCarty’s actions. Another neighbor told deputies McCarty had been intentionally antagonizing his mother and refused to leave him alone when asked.
McCarty was located outside the back of the apartment building and told officers she had been looking for a friend, claiming she received a message from him suggesting he might harm himself. The individual confirmed to officers he had no such intention and said he had simply been venting.
While speaking with McCarty, deputies noted she appeared anxious, was sweating heavily, talking rapidly, and exhibiting involuntary movements. At one point during the investigation, McCarty allegedly made a threatening statement toward a child, which she later denied. Witnesses, including the child’s mother, told officers McCarty had said she would “knock her head off.”
McCarty became increasingly agitated and loud, prompting officers to detain her for safety reasons. She was placed in handcuffs and read her Miranda rights.
McCarty admitted to using marijuana six days prior and methamphetamine three days before that. A drug screening conducted at the scene by Oolitic Marshal R. Duckett using a SoToxa mobile test system returned positive results for methamphetamine, amphetamine, and cannabis.
After consenting to a search of her apartment, officers discovered several empty THC vape cartridges. No charges were filed related to the vape cartridges, but deputies informed McCarty that they are illegal under Indiana law despite being available for purchase at some stores.
McCarty was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where she was booked on the pending charges.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
