BEDFORD – The Bedford Altrusa Club marked the beginning of a new service year in June with a packed agenda of community involvement, member recognition, and planning for upcoming projects.
Newly installed president Kathleen Row led the June 9 meeting at Southland Church of Christ, attended by 17 members. The meeting included a special initiation ceremony, as Sara Kern officially inducted Deborah McIntyre into the club. Sponsored by Becky Bailey and Bill Barnes, McIntyre has already contributed to several Altrusa service projects.
In May, the club participated in the Senior Fair sponsored by WBIW, where members served refreshments and coordinated BINGO games and prize giveaways. Members pictured serving at the event included Loretta Bailey, Kathleen Row, Norma Hoffman, David Bailey, Mary Gabbard, Fannie Lee, Karen Weaver, and Becky Bailey.
Continuing a patriotic tradition, Altrusans also placed American flags on veterans’ graves at multiple cemeteries. Members contributing to this effort included Tammy Harrell, Fannie Lee, Norma Hoffman, Karen Weaver, Kelly Myers, Becky Bailey, Susie Turner, Sara Kern, Rocky Harrell, Phil Bailey, and Loretta and David Bailey.
Altrusa recently launched a new community project: creating handmade lap robes to be gifted to residents of Core Nursing Facility at Christmas. Fabric has already been purchased and work sessions are being planned at the home of Nina Doan.
The club also continued its support of LARC’s Explore & Soar Toward Independence modules, which it sponsors. Mary Barnes circulated sign-up sheets for volunteers to help with classes and at the Lawrence County Museum.
In recognition of academic achievement, Altrusa awarded its annual $1,000 scholarship to John Miskuf, who sent a thank-you note read aloud by Corresponding Secretary Loretta Bailey.
Club members Loretta and David Bailey also delivered magazines and puzzle books to residents at five area nursing homes.
May brought a moment of reflection and gratitude as the club awarded Emeritus Status to two longtime members. Sara Harp was honored for 36 years of service and Pat Kruchten for 12.
A major environmental initiative came to fruition recently as Altrusa members sorted, cleaned, and processed 4,360 pounds of plastic caps and lids—over two tons. Their efforts resulted in the donation of six tables and four new trash receptacles for the Thornton Park Pool.
