SALEM— Torrential downpours across southern Indiana on Friday led to widespread roadway flooding and prompted multiple water rescues.

The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning for parts of the region, which remained in effect until 10 p.m. Approximately six inches of rain fell as severe storms moved through the Kentuckiana area.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office shared dramatic video footage on social media showing Water Street in Salem completely submerged under rushing floodwaters. “Turn around, don’t drown!” Sheriff Brent Miller cautioned in a Facebook post, emphasizing the dangers of driving through flooded areas.
Washington County Emergency Management Agency officials reported that several other streets, predominantly around the city of Salem, were also impassable due to the flash flooding. While most of the floodwaters have since receded, the immediate impact was significant.
Officials confirmed that two water rescues were conducted – one on Mt. Tabor Road and another on Water Street. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the flooding incidents.
