BEDFORD – A 38-year-old Oolitic man, Michael Collins, was sentenced to the Indiana Department of Corrections on Thursday, June 5, by Lawrence Superior Court II Judge Robert Cline, after failing to comply with the terms of his probation.

Collins had previously pleaded guilty to battery against a public safety official, a Level 6 felony, as part of a negotiated plea agreement. He was initially sentenced to 545 days in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with all time suspended, and placed on supervised probation for 365 days.
Following numerous violations of his probation terms and conditions, Collins’ suspended sentence was revoked, and he was ordered to serve it.

Judge Robert Cline sentenced Collins to 500 days in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with credit for 27 actual days already served in jail.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Cummings commented on the sentencing, stating, “This Defendant was allowed to stay in the community and work with probation to rehabilitate his life. However, this Defendant was ignoring the terms and conditions that he had agreed to. You do not get to pick and choose what you want to do while on probation, and the prison was the appropriate result”.
