BLOOMINGTON—The Monroe County Democratic Party (MCDP) is experiencing a shift in leadership. A key member of the Monroe County Election Board resigned, and a seasoned replacement was appointed. The party also announced several new Deputy Chair positions.

John Fernandez has resigned as the Democratic representative on the Monroe County Election Board, effective May 30th. Fernandez, who served with “patience and humility” under both current Chair David Ujdak and former Chair David Henry, is being thanked by the party for his dedicated service through “deeply difficult efforts.”

Penny Githens, a well-known figure with extensive experience in county government and the Indiana election code, will take his place. Chair Ujdak expressed confidence in Githens’ ability to serve all Monroe County residents and ensure “free and fair elections.”
New Deputy Chairs Appointed
Chair Ujdak has also announced several new appointments to key Deputy Chair roles within the Monroe County Democratic Party, effective May 22nd, 2025:
- Chief Deputy – Ed Robertson
- Deputy for Veterans Affairs – Thomas Horrocks
- Deputy for Volunteer Coordination – Ellie Cordell
- Deputy for Rural Affairs and Engagement – Michelle Higgs
- Deputy for Data and Research Infrastructure – Bob Bernacki
