William Grimes, along with his brother Arthur Grimes and Richard Taft, were all charged in connection with Badger’s shooting death. A probable cause affidavit states that the Grimes brothers and Taft robbed and killed Badger, taking his safe, his television, and the money in his pockets.

The conviction is the culmination of an extensive investigation led by Indiana State Police Detectives BJ Patterson, Brad Miller, and Nick Hatfield, alongside retired FBI Special Agent Joann Dowell. Their persistence and dedication were deemed crucial in solving the decade-old case. The detectives worked tirelessly in collaboration with the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department to gather evidence and construct a robust case.

Sullivan County Prosecutor Ann Mischler, supported by Special Prosecuting Attorneys Rob Roberts (lead), Dave Powell, and Courtney Lawrence, played a vital role in presenting the compelling case that ultimately led to Grimes’s conviction. Their thorough examination of the facts, effective coordination with law enforcement, and unwavering commitment to justice were instrumental in securing this guilty verdict.

The Indiana State Police has extended its gratitude to all law enforcement agencies and personnel involved in the investigation, acknowledging their hard work and collaboration as key to bringing the case to a successful conclusion.

Sentencing for William Grimes has been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on June 13. Further details regarding the sentencing will be provided at that time.
